Buying Guide
& FAQ for Vintage JDM HiFi from the Golden Era

Will I need a step-down transformer to use this JDM unit in my country?

A: Yes. True JDM (Japan Domestic Market) audio equipment is engineered strictly to run on Japan’s native 100V power grid. If you live in the US (120V), Europe/UK (230V), or Australia (240V), plugging the unit directly into your wall will damage the delicate vintage circuitry.

•    Our Solution: Operating a 100V unit on a high-quality step-down transformer is incredibly simple, safe, and does not degrade the sound quality. We can recommend or supply the exact wattage transformer you need for your specific amplifier to ensure perfect, lifelong operation.

2

What exactly does your "Full Maintenance Service (Repair and Overhaul)" cover?

A: We believe in absolute transparency and archival-grade preservation. When you opt for our Full Maintenance Service, your component does not just get a basic repair; it undergoes an exhaustive, top-tier restoration executed by our elite network of Japanese Takumi (master technicians).

  • The Meticulous Overhaul Process: Every unit is subjected to deep internal chassis detailing, advanced chemical treatment of all potentiometers and switches to permanently eliminate artifact noise, targeted replacement of aged or leaking capacitors, precision re-soldering of compromised micro-joints, and fresh installation of period-correct belts or bulbs. Finally, the circuitry is carefully re-biased to exact factory-original specifications. You can review our full technical breakdown and tiers directly on our Restoration Service Page.

  • The "Takumi" Philosophy vs. The Western Approach: Unlike the common Western or US mindset that favors a blanket "full recap"—blindly ripping out every single component regardless of its current state—the Japanese Takumi approach is deeply analytical. It treats preservation as an art form. Our masters meticulously measure individual component tolerances, replacing only what is structurally compromised or sonically degraded. This deliberate ethos preserves the irreplaceable, authentic "soul" and original factory voice of the equipment, rather than turning it into a modernized hybrid. For a fascinating, deep-dive discussion on the philosophy of full recapping versus targeted preservation service work, we highly recommend watching this insightful industry analysis on YouTube. While it focuses heavily on classic receivers, the core engineering principles apply flawlessly to all vintage amplifiers.

  • The Endurance Bench Test: To guarantee absolute, unfailing reliability before a piece is cleared for international transit, every restored unit undergoes a rigorous 24-hour stress test. We operate the component on our test bench for 8 hours straight per day, over 3 consecutive days, monitoring thermal stability, power delivery, and sonic purity. If it cannot handle this grueling test of endurance under our watch, it does not leave Japan.

3

Are the replacement parts used during restoration original Japanese components?

A: Preserving the original "sonic signature" of vintage Japanese hi-fi is our highest priority. When our master technicians recap or service a unit, they use premium or high-grade Japanese components—such as Nichicon, Elna, Rubycon capacitors and made-in-Japan transistors. We avoid cheap, generic aftermarket substitutes to ensure your Sansui, Luxman, or Accuphase sounds exactly as the engineers intended in Tokyo decades ago. In order to preserve the unit’s original design and authenticity, certain replacement components may be sourced from donor units of the same model. This is generally the most expensive approach, as original vintage parts have long been discontinued and are increasingly difficult to obtain.

4

How much will international shipping cost, and how do you protect heavy gear?

A: Vintage Japanese amplifiers and turntables are notoriously heavy, often weighing between 20kg to over 40kg.

•    Our Stance on Shipping Fees: Unlike many third-party marketplace sellers (eg. eBay) who inflate their item prices to hide the cost of "free shipping," we believe in absolute transparency. The price you see for our gear is its true, honest value. Shipping fees are calculated accurately at checkout based on the actual weight or the volumetric size of the package, depending on the specific courier service used. Because global shipping rates fluctuate due to geopolitical factors, ongoing international conflicts, and shifting carrier tariffs, we have no control over these costs. To ensure complete fairness, all our shipping fees are fully transparent and tied directly to the live, official reference rates of our premium carriers (like EMS and specialized global couriers).

•    Our Packing Standard: We pack every unit to survive a cross-ocean journey. We use heavy-duty, double-walled boxes, custom high-density foam molding, and wrap delicate faceplates in protective film. For turntables, the heavy platters, counterweights, and headshells are always removed and packed securely underneath the chassis to protect the delicate spindles and tonearm bearings in transit.

5

Who is responsible for customs duties, import taxes, and tariff paperwork?

A: International shipments are subject to the import laws, customs duties, and VAT of your destination country.

These fees are the responsibility of the BUYER and are collected by the courier upon delivery (DAP / Delivered At Place) as per practise by most vintage HiFi Audio stores. To make the process as seamless as possible, we handle all export customs paperwork perfectly on the Japanese side, ensuring your shipment clears international customs quickly without unnecessary gridlock or delays. Unfortunately, we do not offer DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) on behalf of the buyer.

6

If I use your Proxy Sourcing Service, can I see photos and a video demo before it leaves Japan?

A: Absolutely. We act as your trusted, professional eyes and ears on the ground in Japan. When you commission us to hunt down a rare piece of JDM gear from local Japanese networks or platforms like Yahoo Auctions Japan, we manage the entire process transparently.

  • The Sourcing Process: We thoroughly research all available sale options and present them to you. Once a target unit is agreed upon, full 100% payment for the item must be made upfront to legally secure it. Once the unit arrives safely at our holding facility, we send you a comprehensive gallery of high-resolution internal and external photos, along with a high-fidelity video demonstration of the unit functioning perfectly before it is cleared for international transit.

  • Our Sourcing Fees: To initiate a dedicated search, we charge a modest initial curation/coordination deposit of JPY 48,800 (~USD $300). This covers a thorough, active sourcing window of 1.5 to 2 months. If your request is incredibly rare and requires an extended search beyond this initial period, a renewal fee will apply to keep our team actively hunting. Once the ideal unit is successfully purchased, we charge a flat 8% service fee based on the item's purchase price. This covers securing the unit on your behalf via local Japanese banking channels, managing all communications with the Japanese seller, and absorbing international/domestic bank transfer and currency conversion fees. (Note: Local Japan domestic transport and final international shipping are charged separately).

  • Where to Find More Details: You can read our full, legally binding process, sign up for the service, or check out our premium restoration tiers directly on our dedicated Sourcing Service Page.

Are the wood cabinets, faceplates, and lettering original or restored/reprinted?

A: We prioritize structural and cosmetic authenticity while ensuring every piece looks stunning in your home. We clearly document the exact cosmetic condition of every unique item in its specific listing.

  • Artisan Cabinet Restoration: The majority of our wooden cabinets undergo a meticulous, premium refurbishment process in-house. Over a painstaking 3 to 4-week period, our craftsmen carefully patch any vintage scratches or cracks, remove the aged, degraded factory finishes, and apply fresh, beautiful coatings of high-grade organic paint and oils to bring out the natural luster of the wood. (To see stunning, real-world examples of this craftsmanship in action, we invite you to explore the exquisite woodwork throughout our curated Sansui Amplifiers Collection.

  • Faceplates & Hardware Detailing: Every faceplate is gently cleaned and detailed to preserve the original factory lettering and silk-screening. Furthermore, all external hardware—including the rear RCA jacks—is professionally cleaned, deoxit-treated, and polished to ensure optimal signal conductivity and a gleaming, showroom-ready presentation.

If a piece has been fully re-veneered or cosmetically modified, we will explicitly note it in the product description. With us, what you see and read is exactly what you get: masterfully preserved audio history.

8

What's your return policy if it arrives damaged or doesn't work as described?

A: Every piece in our collection is held to an elite standard we are proud to stand behind. To ensure your absolute peace of mind, we have implemented a strict, mandatory final step in our workflow that reflects our ultimate due diligence and dedication to Takumi craftsmanship:

  • The Mandatory Final QC Protocol: Immediately prior to secure packing, every single piece of equipment undergoes a meticulous, final in-house audio and functional bench test. We film this comprehensive validation process and upload the high-fidelity video directly to a private Google Drive folder for your personal review before the unit departs. In the rare event that even the slightest anomaly is detected during this final screening, we immediately route the unit back to our workshop for final servicing and an extended bench test review entirely at our own cost. We will never ship a component until it is absolutely flawless.

  • Comprehensive Transit Protection: Because international transit requires deep trust, every package we dispatch can be fully insured for its declared purchase value. In the rare event of transit damage, please contact us immediately with detailed photographs of both the external packaging and the unit. We will seamlessly guide you through the insurance claims process with our premium shipping partners (EMS or DHL). Please note that certain courier services do enforce specific insurance coverage ceilings or limitations depending on the destination country; we monitor this closely to maximize your protection.

  • Our Workmanship Warranty: If you encounter any unexpected operational issues upon unboxing your unit, please notify us within 7 days of delivery. We back our elite restoration and repair craftsmanship with a 15-day warranty. Should a component require attention, we will immediately collaborate with you on a mutually agreeable solution—whether that involves expert remote diagnosis or coordinating and subsidizing support with a qualified, third-party vintage audio technician local to your area.

  • Returns & Authorizations: We honor a 15-day return window starting from the official date of arrival. To qualify for a return, the item must be in its exact received condition, packed securely in its original specialized materials, and pre-approved with an official Return Authorization (RA) number from our team. Approved returns are subject to a restocking fee to cover the complex logistics of international re-importation.

For a complete, transparent breakdown of our terms, step-by-step claims instructions, and restocking details, please review our official Shipping, Warranty & Returns Policy Page.

Is your inventory cross-listed on international marketplaces like eBay? Why do certain models appear on those platforms under different seller names and fluctuating prices?

A: No. We do not list our inventory on eBay, nor do we authorize any third-party marketplaces to sell our equipment. What you are observing is a widespread and highly frustrating phenomenon well-documented across international audio forums, known as "phantom" or "proxy" reseller listing:

  • The Reality of eBay Proxy Sellers: Most of these listings are operated by rogue, unauthorized resellers who do not actually possess the equipment. They scrape high-resolution images and text from legitimate platforms—including our own catalog or exclusive Japanese domestic listings—and repost them on eBay at a markup. If an unsuspecting buyer purchases from them, they attempt to scramble and buy the unit from the original source. If the item has already been sold, they simply cancel your order with a generic excuse. To protect our clients and the integrity of our inventory, we strictly block and do not allow rogue proxy agents to buy or flip our curated collection.

  • The "Free Shipping" Illusion & Vague Descriptions: To lure buyers, these resellers often mask heavy cross-ocean transport fees by heavily padding their margins or using basic, low-priority shipping methods that lack the custom, high-density molded packaging required for massive 30kg vintage amplifiers. Furthermore, look closely at their item condition reports. You will notice incredibly vague, copy-and-paste disclaimers such as "Used with signs of wear; has many scratches and stains" or "Operation checked. Generallly good condition." * The Absence of Bench Testing and Tech Work: These generic statements are a major red flag. They offer zero evidence of actual engineering or restoration work. An "operation check" on eBay often means nothing more than plugging the unit into a wall to see if the power light turns on. It does not mean the unit has been tested for audio purity across all channels, re-biased to factory spec, or evaluated with turntables, tape decks, and high-fidelity speakers over a multi-day testing window.

  • Spotting the Red Flags: You will very frequently see the exact same amplifier, utilizing the exact same set of photos, listed concurrently by multiple "different" sellers across varying regions. This is definitive proof that none of them actually have the physical unit in their hands.

When you buy directly from VintageJapanHiFi.com, you are buying from the absolute and rightful owner of the asset. You are paying for a physical unit sitting on our test benches, masterfully restored by true Takumi craftsmen, fully documented via private Google Drive video validation, and packed by logistics experts who specialize exclusively in premium, heavy-weight vintage audio.

IWhat is the difference between a Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) model and an International model? For example, the infamous and highly regarded Sansui AU-919 versus the Sansui AU-D907X Decade or AU-D907G Extra?

A: This is one of the most fascinating chapters in vintage audio history. During the golden era of the 1970s and 1980s, Japanese manufacturers like Sansui, Pioneer, and Sony saved their absolute best, most uncompromising engineering for their own domestic market (JDM).

Understanding the differences comes down to three distinct pillars:

•    The Evolution of the Flagship (The Sansui Legacy): In 1979, Sansui released the infamous and highly regarded AU-919 to the international market. Domestically in Japan, this exact amplifier was known as the AU-D907 (the second generation of their revered "07 Series"). However, after the AU-919, Sansui drastically scaled back the build quality of their international exports due to global economic shifts and high export tariffs. While international buyers were offered later export models that were lighter and less powerful, Sansui continued to innovate furiously inside Japan, creating JDM masterpieces that were never officially exported to the West.

•    The Pinnacle of JDM Engineering & Vinyl Purism: This brings us to ultimate JDM-exclusive models like the AU-D907X Decade and the AU-D907G Extra. These units represent a massive technological leap over the international AU-919.

•    The AU-D907X Decade features Sansui’s revolutionary Twin Diamond X balanced amplifier architecture, massive power transformer and copper-plated chassis shielding.

•    The AU-D907G Extra is legendary among vinyl purists as one of the last great Sansui models to feature two dedicated phono inputs (Phono 1 and Phono 2, both MM and MC capable) alongside an onboard, high-grade MC step-up transformer (SUT). The MC transformer uses a linear step design with a high-grade permalloy core made by Magnetic Ink Co., Ltd., extremely high purity, and special annealing to suppress distortion. This built-in analog transformer approach differs from many export and Western-market integrated amplifiers from the same era, which often used active MC preamp stages (discrete transistors or ICs) instead of a true step-up transformer. Sansui’s Japanese domestic flagships, including the AU-D907G Extra, integrated a studio-grade analog SUT directly into the chassis and also employed a copper-plated chassis and non-magnetic elements to reduce magnetic distortion, contributing to a warm tonal character, low noise, and strong vinyl articulation that many later budget-oriented designs did not replicate.

Most casual buyers have no idea that the "Internal Audio War" in Japan during the late '70s and '80s was essentially the space race of the audiophile world. Brands like Sansui, Pioneer, Sony, and Trio/Kenwood were aggressively fighting for domestic dominance, throwing their absolute best engineering, rarest materials, and massive R&B budgets into units meant only for Japanese homes.

The Verdict: Buying a true JDM model like the AU-D907G Extra or X Decade grants you access to an elite tier of Japanese audio engineering and vinyl playback capability that the Western world was never meant to hear. To enjoy these ultimate domestic flagships safely and perfectly in your country, all you need is a high-quality, isolated step-down transformer (converting your local voltage to a clean 100V), which we happily help our clients select.
